Longmoor Military Railway
The Longmoor Military Railway is fondly remembered by thousands of military railwaymen who trained and served there from its early days through to final closure in 1969.

The early Railway at Longmoor can be traced back to an unusual, and probably unique operation to transport a number of wooden huts 4.5 miles from Longmoor to Borden Camp in 1904-5.
In the early days the railway was known as the Woolmer Instructional Military Railway (WIMR) or affectionately as Will It Move Railway! The title Woolmer Instructional Military Railway was officially applied in 1908, although before that may have been known as the Bordon and Longmoor Military Tramway.

During World War 1 the centre was responsible for training both construction troops and operating staff, and sent more than 1,600 officers and 59,600 soldiers overseas. It had a maximum establishment of more than 1100 in 1918.

The decision to change the title to the Longmoor Military Railway was made in 1935, which is how it remained throughout World War 2. During the peak period, the strength of the Longmoor garrison reached 7,000, while more than 80,000 passed through the depot for new units or reinforcements. By the end of the war there were 71 miles of track at Longmoor. Following widespread reviews of the rolls and organisation of the British Army in the late sixties, and stringent cuts, a decision was made to close the Longmoor Military Railway.

One final public Open Day was held on 5th July 1969, and the closure ceremony took place on 31st Oct 1969.
